I was recently leading a group coaching session, and one of my clients shared a story about a door in his house that hadn’t closed properly…for seven years.
The cat door situation
Because the door didn’t latch, the cats would occasionally sneak in and use the corner of the room as a secondary litter box. Understandably, this infuriated my client.
He’d told himself for years: “I’ve gotta fix that door.”
And then one day recently, he did.
He took it off the hinges, sanded the top, moved one hinge plate slightly and rehung the door.
It took him 25 minutes.
But then he said something that’s been living in my mind ever since:
“Did fixing that door take 25 minutes…or seven years?”
What are you putting off?
How many seemingly small problems in your life have taken up permanent mental real estate?
How many frustrations—at work, at home, in your creative life—could be resolved in 30 minutes or fewer, but instead linger for years, quietly draining your energy?
And more importantly: Why haven’t you fixed them?
In my client’s case, the deeper truth was this:
That stinky, frustrating corner of his house had become a place where he could unleash unspoken rage—about clients, politics, environmental anxiety and fear of his own creativity.
When he fixed the door and the cats were no longer an issue, he asked:
“Where does my rage go now?”
What’s the “door” in your life?
Maybe you’re not avoiding a hardware fix, but I bet you recognize these:
- You say you want better work-life balance, but you check email every weekend while resenting it
- You’re frustrated by constant interruptions, but you still drop everything to be helpful
- You know your ideas have value, but you don’t speak up in meetings where others dominate airtime
These are not small issues. They’re symptoms of something deeper.
And until you name what’s really going on, you’ll keep being mad at the cats instead of fixing the door.
This is what coaching does
Coaching with me isn’t about productivity hacks (although sometimes that’s what’s needed and we work on those).
It’s about uncovering the truth behind the friction in your life and building strategies that create real change.
As your coach, I help you:
- Get curious about what’s actually going on beneath the surface
- Identify the story you’ve been unconsciously following
- Build a path forward that aligns with who you are and what you really want
Because once you know why the door has stayed broken, it becomes much easier to fix it for good.

I offer a free, 30-minute inquiry call because the first step isn’t always big. Sometimes it just takes a quiet conversation to say, “I think something needs to change.”
